Activities

Afissos is famous for its crystal-clear, calm waters in the Pagasetic Gulf, making them ideal for families, swimmers, and water sports enthusiasts.

Afissos is one of the most vibrant and beautiful coastal villages in South Pelion. It perfectly combines a cosmopolitan seaside vibe with traditional Pelion charm, making it an excellent base for exploring the surrounding region.

Depending on your mood, here are the best things to do in Afissos and its surroundings:

1. Relax and Enjoy Water Sports at Afissos Beaches

Afissos is famous for its crystal-clear, calm waters in the Pagasetic Gulf, making them ideal for families, swimmers, and water sports enthusiasts.

  • Abovos: The most popular and well-organized beach in the village, featuring fine pebbles and sand. Here you’ll find lively beach bars, tavernas, and plenty of water sports options (SUP, kayaking, jet skiing).
  • Kallifteri: Located at the entrance of the village, this beach offers golden sand, shallow waters, and a lush green backdrop. It is fully organized and a fantastic spot to stay until sunset.
  • Lagoudi: If you prefer peace and quiet, this is a small, unorganized pebbly cove with plenty of natural shade from the trees, tucked between Abovos and the main village.

2. Stroll and Dine in Afissos

  • The Waterfront Promenade: In the evening, the road in front of the harbor closes to cars. It’s the perfect time for a stroll, a coffee, gelato, or a cocktail right by the water.
  • Gastronomy: Enjoy fresh fish, seafood meze, and the traditional Pelion dish spetsofai (sausage and pepper stew) at the local tavernas. Don’t miss out on trying the local tsipouro (with or without anise) served with assortment dishes.

3. Day Trips and Exploring the Surroundings

Traditional Mountain Villages

  • Milies (15-20 mins away): One of the most historic villages in Pelion. Visit the historic library, the Church of Taxiarches (famous for its incredible acoustics and hidden history), and wander through the stone-paved alleys (kalderimia).
  • Vizitsa (20 mins away): Located right next to Milies, Vizitsa is a protected traditional settlement packed with grand, stone-built Pelion mansions. It’s the ideal spot for a traditional Greek coffee in the square and buying homemade sweets from the local women’s cooperative.
  • Lefokastro (10 mins away): If you are looking for absolute tranquility, this tiny, authentic fishing village just south of Afissos features quiet beaches and scenic seaside fish tavernas.

Unique Experiences

  • The Little Train of Pelion (Moutzouris): Catch a ride on the historic 19th-century steam train that runs from Lechonia to Milies. The route takes you through lush forests, over stunning stone bridges, and offers breathtaking views of the gulf.
  • Hiking: The area boasts excellent signposted trails. A very popular and moderately easy hike is the one connecting Afissos to Milies, taking you through olive groves and forested slopes.

💡 Tip: The sunset from Afissos is widely considered one of the best in the Pagasetic Gulf, as the sun dips right behind the mountains across the sea. Grab a spot by the harbor around dusk!
